Some folks say that
the spirit of Jean Lafitte, the pirate, still hovers over the dark
waters of Lake Charles, with its cypress bayous and ghost-like Spanish
moss. In the murky gloom of twilight, elusive swamp lights offer a
promise of buried treasure just beyond. It is said that the water
around Lake Charles still provides sanctuary to the notorious pirate.
Legend is that his final resting place in on the eastern shore of the
Lake where his spirit still guards the treasure that remains
undisturbed at its bottom. Krewe du Lac memorializes this spirit when
every year we commemorate the romantic lore of the swashbuckling Jean
Lafitte in the celebration we now call the Mardi Gras.
